A change of pace – and lighting – this week. I headed out to the Lakeside Athletics Stadium for The Runner’s Tribe to cover the 2012 Australian Athletics Championships.
A beautiful day in Melbourne certainly hadn’t helped crowds any – throughout the afternoon the day had the feel of a Little Aths carnival – however there were some notable big name performances scattered throughout the day.
Commonwealth Gold Medallist and Olympic medallist Jared Tallent was never troubled in the 5000km Walk, and his wife Claire Tallent made it a Tallent show as she won the same title in the Women’s event.
Melissa Breen narrowly missed the A-Qualifier in the semis of the Women’s 100m. Her time fell just 0.02sec outside of a guaranteed trip to London. Unable to improve on it in the final, she continues to chase a seat on the plane.
In the Men’s 100m, Joshua Ross blew the field away after the earlier disqualification of main rival Aaron Rouge-Serret. Set against a spectacular Melbourne sunset, Ross crossed the line in 10.23sec.
Tamsyn Manou (left) again won the National Women’s 800m final, but slowed down over the last 100m, and missed her London qualifier. An emotional Manou thanked the crowd and her family in what will be her final time defending her title.
