When U2 announced that they’d be bringing Jay-Z with them to Australia in 2010, the reaction was polarising. For some who had hated every minute of Kanye West in 2006, this wasn’t going to make them smile.

There were those though who would come to see Jay-Z, such is the pulling power of the self proclaimed ‘Best Rapper Alive’, and from a record company perspective it’s genius, opening up a whole new demographic of fans.

He started slowly in Melbourne, getting a very lukewarm mid-week reception, but aided by an amazing 9 piece band and a group of fans at the front of the stage who were warming to him, by the time he’d reached Sydney and Perth he had a crowd that was quite happy to bounce, and wave their Dynasty signs in the air. U2′s Australian leg of the 360 tour comes to a spectacular Christmas close at Perth’s Subiaco Oval in front of 45,000 fans.

All I Want Is You made its second appearance, and the night finished with a crowd request – Party Girl – that led into the closer Moment of Surrender.

Flawless performance tonight, and as it turns out, my favourite show of the tour.

It had been almost 12 years since U2 last graced the west coast of Australia, and even to a population used to waiting for international acts to include them on their touring schedule, this was too long.

U2′s first Australian 360 show on a Saturday night was an incredible return to the city where they had opened their LoveTown tour in 1989.

The Ashes had taken over the town, and with that in mind, Bono introduced his band mates as Australian cricketers, including himself as David Boon, which drew chants of “Boooooooonie” from the audience. Bono might talk a bit more than the old rotund number 3, but Boonie could drink the Irishman under the table.
