U2 (Ireland) – Popmart 1998

Bono, U2 (Waverley Park, 21st February 1998)

U2 brought their Popmart monolith to Australia in February 1998, playing Waverley Park in Melbourne and the Sydney Football Stadium in Sydney.

The Sydney show, held on the 28th February 1998, remains the greatest U2 show I’ve seen. Pouring rain in Sydney, a band in incredible form, a setlist to die for, and bolts of lightning through the sky during One, after a short Irish singer had requested all the lights be turned off.

It was notionally a tribute to Michael Hutchence, but it was simply the best U2 show I’ve ever seen.
