Pond, Northcote Social Club (Melbourne, 22nd April 2012)

A Sunday night in Northcote saw the first of 2 sold out shows for West Australian psychadelic rock outfit Pond. The brainchild of a fair chunk of Tame Impala folk have built quite a following, and having caught them once before (as support for The Flaming Lips) I was pretty keen to catch them again.

Arriving early – or so I thought – the Northcote Social Club looked anything but sold out. Seems the set times posted on Facebook had the lads taking the stage at 11:20pm. Turns out they were on at 10:00pm. No doubt some unhappy campers arrived part way into the show.

Nevertheless, there were plenty of folk in at the NSC as Pond took to the stage, launching into an instrumental cacophony of sound, driven primarily by heavy bass and delay filled guitar work from Joseph Ryan.

Nick Allbrook (known tonight as Paisley Adams) is his customary hyperactive self on lead vocals. Rather than deliver structured lyrics, Paisley’s voice becomes part of the sonic wall. The sound here tonight – for a small venue – is immense. It’s a fantastic venue, typically Melbourne, but with a vibe a world away from Sunday night. The bar does a solid trade and the crowd do their bit, soaking up what are probably best described as sonic ideas with gusto.

Adams adds his unique style to the night throughout through his vocals, keyboards and occasional work as a flautist.

Whilst the tunes lack structure, and certainly don’t see you leaving the venue with a song in your head, they most definitely lead to further listens. On the whole, it’s music that – to this writer at least – works best when you’re doing something else. Whatever that something else may be.
