Corey Taylor, Slipknot (Rod Laver Arena, 1st March 2012)

Slipknot scare me. I’m no bible-totin’ guy in a tan cardigan, but there’s something house of horrors about this band of freaky looking creatures from Des Moines, Iowa.

As a photographer though, they are never dull, and most certainly give you plenty to work with.

Rod Laver Arena is far from full tonight, but the excitement down the front is at fever pitch amongst the self proclaimed maggots awaiting their boiler-suited heroes.

Slipknot lead shouter Corey Taylor paces his way to the front of stage amid flames and smoke, perching himself on a platform. Signalling all fans to get involved, he cuts a strong figure in his trademark red boilersuit and mask. His bandmates make a variety of entrances – atop one another’s shoulders, via an aborted crowd surf, or via a significant climb to the drum platform.

Unable to stay for the full set, partly due to the restrictions and partly due to needing to change underwear after the pyrotechnic explosions, in what I was able to catch Slipknot certainly spared no expense nor effort in making this a spectacular experience. Well worth checking out at Soundwave, even if the music isn’t particularly to your liking.

Probably don’t show your kids before bedtime though.
