Cosmo Jarvis @ East Brunswick Club (Melbourne, 13th October 2011)

Cosmo Jarvis gave Australian fans a spectacular  serving of material from his recently released and brilliantly titled Is the World Strange of Am I Strange? on Thursday night. Every single minute of his show hit the target, and whilst the venue was stocked with plenty of fans, without doubt a bunch of interested onlookers left converted also.

The singer, songwriter, musician and filmmaker scored himself a viral hit with his song and accompanying video Gay Pirates, and whilst the crowd would have to wait til the end of the set before giving this song some Melbourne treatment, Jarvis showed he had more than enough repertoire to deliver an incredible upbeat set at the East Brunswick Club.

Blessed with incredible musicianship, the 3 piece made up of Cosmo and the two ‘arry’s drew the entire crowd in.

Current single Sure As Hell Not Jesus was a live highlight, and featured early in the set. Train Down Town, described as a song about a futuristic train ride by Jarvis also hit the mark.

In fact, there was nothing that didn’t. Perhaps only the pink bra lopped on stage by the lass at the front. It fell somewhere in no-man’s land between Jarvis and drummer Harry. After a brief discussion of who should put it on, it was left to rest where it fell.

The highlight of the night though was the spontaneous pirate stage invasion by a group of fans, something that Jarvis said hadn’t happened before and drew laughs, headscratches, and not least it’s fair share of ‘arggggggggghhhhs’.

The crowd were not about to let the man finish, and that meant playing Problems, before ending the night, almost reluctantly, on a tune they’d not rehearsed. Not surprisingly, it scrubbed up beautifully.

As if being a great songwriter, singer and guitarist wasn’t enough, he stayed around to take photos and sign the CDs of anyone that wanted them. A great, great show and one that slots, without a doubt, into the top echelon for 2011.
