This would be the 2nd time I’d been along to shoot [ME], a band about to embark on a three month recording trip to the UK with Record Label Lizard King Records. Tonight, I was shooting for Australian online music journal Tone Deaf.

Even in the space of a few months, these guys from Melbourne have really honed their craft and blew the lid off their farewell show at the Evelyn on Sunday night.

If you’re going to play a Sunday night, it always helps to play one on the eve of a public holiday Monday.

Perhaps it was fitting that Monday was the Queen’s Birthday holiday in Australia, given the sound [Me] produce is not a world away from Messrs Mercury and May.

There were a bunch of new songs tonight, which worked brilliantly, but the biggest improvement in my opinion came about out of necessity. Unable to play guitar or piano due to a hand injury, lead singer Luke Ferris really benefitted from the freedom of being untethered. Using every bit of the stage – and then some – Ferris was on fire, and looks a natural frontman. His interaction with the audience and band mates really seemed to thrive without the painful inconvenience of having to play.

With a strong local following, there’s a lot of people looking forward to hearing the output of their trip to the UK
